Meet Sophia
Every season has its own quiet language.I am Sophia, a certified Sogetsu Ikebana Instructor (Teacher’s Diploma 3rd Grade) based in Singapore. Through contemporary Ikebana, I invite people to slow down, notice the changing seasons, and discover beauty in the spaces we often overlook. My journey with Sogetsu continues under the mentorship of Master Josephine Tan as I work toward my Teacher’s Diploma 2nd Grade, carrying forward the spirit of the Sogetsu School founded in Tokyo —a tradition that embraces freedom, creativity, and personal expression. In my workshops, flowers are never just decorations. They are a way of observing light, movement, texture, and time. A branch gathered from a roadside tree, a leaf shaped by the wind, or a seasonal bloom can all become the beginning of a conversation.Whether we are creating a small arrangement for the home or a larger installation for a space, my hope is always the same: that each piece helps us feel more present, more connected to nature, and more aware of the quiet beauty already surrounding us.Ikebana, to me, is not only the art of arranging flowers. It is the art of collecting the seasons, one moment at a time.

Sogetsu: The Avant-Garde Spirit of Modern Ikebana
Founded by Teshigahara Sofu in 1927, the Sogetsu School is one of the most influential schools of contemporary Japanese ikebana.Breaking free from classical conventions, Sogetsu champions a revolutionary principle: anyone can arrange flowers, anywhere, at any time.Rather than focusing solely on floral beauty, it explores the expressive interplay of line, space, movement, and the unique character of every material. In Sogetsu, every material—from a humble blade of grass to the branch of a roadside tree—holds artistic potential. There is no single correct answer, only an authentic dialogue between the creator, the material, and the present moment.
